You Cannot Run a Hotel Without a Reward Programme
Every hotel owner knows these guests. They check in, enjoy the room, compliment the staff, leave a kind review, and then book somewhere else on their next trip. Nothing went wrong. Nothing gave them a reason to come back, either.
That is the gap a reward programme fills. It is not a nice extra, and it is not just for international chains. If you own a hotel today, a reward programme is part of how you keep the guests you have already worked hard to win.

Loyalty is a relationship
A reward programme is how a hotel says to a guest: we remember you, and we want you back.
Without one, every stay is a one-off transaction. The guest pays, leaves, and the relationship ends at checkout. The next time they travel, they start their search from zero, and your hotel competes with every other option on equal terms.
With a reward programme, the relationship continues after checkout. Each stay builds toward something, so the guest has a real reason to choose you again. Over time, they stop shopping around and start coming back by habit. That is how a first-time guest becomes a regular.
A reward programme also helps you know your guests. Members are guests you can recognise, thank and invite back, instead of names you never see again.
The world’s biggest hotels are built on it
The largest hotel groups in the world treat their reward programmes as the centre of the business. Marriott Bonvoy passed 295 million members in the second quarter of 2026, and Hilton reports more than 260 million Hilton Honors members.
They reward guests on every single night. Here is what a standard member earns back on a $100 night:
What guests get back for every night they stay
Programme | Points Earned | Est. Value | Back |
|---|---|---|---|
Marriott Bonvoy | 1,000 points | ≈ US$7 | ~7% |
Hilton Honors | 1,000 points | ≈ US$4 | ~4% |
Both programmes give standard members 10 points for every US dollar at most of their hotels, so a $100 night earns 1,000 points. What those points are worth is lower than the number suggests: at NerdWallet’s 2026 estimates of 0.7 US cents per Marriott point and 0.4 cents per Hilton point, that night gives back roughly $7 at Marriott and $4 at Hilton. Elite members earn more.

The lesson is not the exact percentage. It is that the most successful hotel businesses in the world never let a night go unrewarded.
What independent hotels should take from this
Independent hotels do not need hundreds of millions of members to benefit from loyalty. They need a programme guests understand and can actually feel.
The big programmes are powerful but complicated. Points per dollar, elite tiers and award prices that change by hotel and date mean many members never know what their points are worth.
Travellers notice. One of the best-loved rewards in travel was the old Hotels.com promise of “stay 10 nights, get 1 reward night”. When it was replaced in the US by a more complicated scheme, customers pushed back, and Hotels.com has since brought a 10-night reward back in the UK.
Guests reward simplicity. A programme that is easy to understand keeps people coming back.
Quickrooms recommendation for independent hotels
For independent hotels, we recommend a reward programme that gives back about 10% of every night.
On a ₦50,000 night, that is ₦5,000 in rewards. After ten nights, a loyal guest has earned roughly one night’s value. It is more generous than what a standard Marriott or Hilton member earns per night, and it is simple enough for any guest to understand at a glance.

A few principles keep it working:
Make the value obvious.
Guests should know what their rewards are worth in naira, without a chart.
Let early rewards show.
A guest should see something meaningful after a few stays, not after fifty.
Protect your room revenue.
Limit how much of a single booking rewards can cover, so every stay still earns.
The technology behind your reward programme
Running a reward programme should not mean spreadsheets, paper cards or front-desk guesswork. Quickrooms allows hotels to create and manage their own reward programmes, and we have the best technology platform for running one.
Your guests already expect to be rewarded. Give them a reason to come back.
